Mark Your Calendar The National Hydropower Association’s (NHA) 2009 Annual Conference will be held from May 11-13, 2009 at the Capital Hilton Hotel located in Washington, DC. A new Congress and a new Administration will be settling into Washington...bringing new perspectives on and approaches to water and energy issues. The NHA Annual Conference is your opportunity to connect with what is happening in DC on the water and energy front. The following questions will be addressed:
USA Today HIghlights Hydro Resurgence Congress Passes Renewable Energy Tax Extenders Read NHA Executive Director Linda Church Ciocci's statement on the renewable energy tax extenders language that is included in the financial rescue bill. OSAW Award Competition Now Open Each year, NHA presents the Outstanding Stewards of America's Waters (OSAW) Awards to organizations that have undertaken projects that have strengthened the hydropower industry in unique ways. NHA Congratulates DOE Clean Tech Water Power Project Winners The National Hydropower Association congratulates the winners of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Research & Development Clean Technology Water Power Project awards. Five of the 14 winning projects DOE selected involve NHA member organizations. To learn more, follow this link. Hydro facility offers backdrop for national discussion on renewables Presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) saw firsthand how the U.S. hydropower industry helps contribute to America’s twin goals of energy independence and a cleaner energy future when he toured NHA member Voith Siemens’ York, Pennsylvania, turbine manufacturing plant. Following his tour, Obama addressed plant employees about his energy plan and pledged support for hydropower as a renewable resource to be harnessed alongside other renewable technologies. NHA Wins Ocean News and Technology Magazine Award The National Hydropower Association is pleased to announce that it has received the 2008 Education Pioneer Award for its work on behalf of ocean and tidal hydropower technologies. “We’re delighted to receive this award, which recognizes our work on behalf of ocean and tidal energy, as well as other hydropower technologies,” said NHA executive director Linda Church Ciocci. “Our members are committed to developing all these promising technologies as we create new energy resources. Recent estimates from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and other groups suggest that ocean and tidal technologies could provide 10,000 megawatts of capacity by 2025. Adding conventional hydropower and instream hydrokinetic applications increases that number to 23,000 megawatts. Overall, about 95,000 megawatts of capacity from these resources could be brought online, which would double hydropower’s current contribution to America’s energy mix. In presenting the award, ON&T publisher Dan White singled out NHA’s leadership in recognizing the potential of ocean and tidal resources.
