USA Today HIghlights Hydro Resurgence
USA Today on Tues., Oct. 28, ran a story about the growing interest in hydropower as a source of domestic, climate-friendly, renewable energy. The article mentions NHA members who are expanding current projects, builiding on existing non-powered dams, and installing pumped storage capacity. Please follow this link to access the article

Hydro facility offers backdrop for national discussion on renewables

Presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) saw firsthand how the U.S. hydropower industry helps contribute to America’s twin goals of energy independence and a cleaner energy future when he toured NHA member Voith Siemens’ York, Pennsylvania, turbine manufacturing plant. Following his tour, Obama addressed plant employees about his energy plan and pledged support for hydropower as a renewable resource to be harnessed alongside other renewable technologies.

Congress forms Hydropower Caucus

America's largest source of renewable energy now has its own bipartisan caucus in Congress. The Hydropower Caucus will serve as a forum to discuss issues relating to hydropower and educate members of Congress on the multiple benefits that domestic, climate-friendly and renewable hydropower provides to the nation's energy portfolio.

NHA Wins Ocean News and Technology Magazine Award

The National Hydropower Association is pleased to announce that it has received the 2008 Education Pioneer Award for its work on behalf of ocean and tidal hydropower technologies.

“We’re delighted to receive this award, which recognizes our work on behalf of ocean and tidal energy, as well as other hydropower technologies,” said NHA executive director Linda Church Ciocci.  “Our members are committed to developing all these promising technologies as we create new energy resources.

Recent estimates from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and other groups suggest that ocean and tidal technologies could provide 10,000 megawatts of capacity by 2025. Adding conventional hydropower and instream hydrokinetic applications increases that number to 23,000 megawatts. Overall, about 95,000 megawatts of capacity from these resources could be brought online, which would double hydropower’s current contribution to America’s energy mix.

In presenting the award, ON&T publisher Dan White singled out NHA’s leadership in recognizing the potential of ocean and tidal resources.

Hydropower
Is the power of moving water and comes in many forms from conventional to new emerging technologies of ocean, wave, tidal and hydrokinetic energy. Hydropower is a domestic source of clean, renewable, reliable and affordable electricity. It is more than electricity. Hydropower also provides recreational enhancements, flood control, and irrigation. It is an extremely important energy source that has significant growth opportunity in helping the nation meet new energy supply with a reliable and low-emitting, home-grown energy source. Hydropower is clean energy for a secure future.

No other energy source offers so many advantages.
